Internationally, communities
mark March 21 as the International Day for the elimination of racial
discrimination. In Sri Lanka, however, the Tamils continue to be
persecuted and discriminated based on their ethnicity. For the last
61 years - since Sri Lanka's Independence from UK - Tamils have been
denied equal access to education and employment. Several
legislations have been passed to deprive equal treatment of the
people. They have been discriminated on the basis of their language,
religion, culture, ethnicity, and political views.
In 1983, it took a violent turn and since then the country has been
embroiled in a brutal ethnic conflict causing the deaths of more
than 100,000 Tamils. Nearly 1.5 million Tamils have left Sri Lanka
for fear of safety.
More recently, this persecution has taken a genocidal proportion. In
the last three months alone, more than 3000 Tamils have been killed
and thousands more have been wounded.
What can you do?
